Sac Chapter CLSA Day in the Field-Sutter Buttes

We went up to the Sutter Buttes to recon some possible 19th Century government corners...

Here is Emerson Smith (started his business the year I was born) running compass and chain line (using a fiberglass tape).


Emerson again using a mysterious calculating device which requires no batteries!!!


We didn't find anything confirmed but I learned a few things. We did find a few possible BTs.

you refer to the Curta calculator. Curta calculators (AKA the coffee grinder) are collector's items, very valuable.

no he's using a more basic calculating device-a sliderule.

I have no knowledge of such an instrument ... cooks do all their math on the fly!
